ROLLA, Mo. – Three days after a deadly storm outbreak across the state, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported Sunday night of one weather-related death in Rolla.
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF2 tornado struck the area, leaving behind damage to over 750 structures just in Rolla, and at least another 150 in Phelps County.
According to MSHP Troop I, one person died as a result of using a generator inside a residence. Details, including the person’s identity, were not disclosed. They added that they never recommend running a generator indoor or near a residence.
“The damage across our community is extensive, and the recovery journey will be challenging. However, our community is resilient, and we will overcome this difficult time together,” MSHP said in a release.
As cleanup efforts continue, those who would like to volunteer to assist should check in at Big Lots at 1001 South Bishop Ave. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MSHP Troop I is asking volunteers to not self-deploy anywhere.
Beyond volunteering, the Big Lots is also collecting donations for supplies.
Anyone in need of cleanup assistance is urged to call (573) 415-9878.
The state of Missouri had 12 total fatalities due to the severe weather Friday, not including the death in Rolla. Two of those occurred in Jefferson and St. Louis counties.
As of Monday morning, at least seven tornadoes occurred in our viewing area. Crews from the National Weather Service will continue assessing damage to determine if there were more.
