ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Jail Commissioner Tammy Ross is the latest person to sue Sheriff Alfred Montgomery. The lawsuit alleges the sheriff’s office detained Ross for refusing deputies access to an inmate.
Attorney Joe Neill filed the suit on behalf of Ross.
“She wants to see good government, and that’s not what we’re seeing at the sheriff’s office,” he said.
Neill says Ross was wrongfully detained under sheriff’s orders for doing her job.
“Yet Montgomery was insisting that she do something that was wrong and was against public policy,” Neill said.
Sheriff Montgomery reportedly wanted his department to interview an alleged rape victim, whom police spokesman Mitch McCoy said on Feb. 19 was off limits after police had conducted an interview.
“There was an order given by this department not to interview the victim of a crime that we were investigating,” McCoy said.
Neill alleges the sheriff insisted on doing it his way.
“He held her wrongfully,” Neill said. “And he also had the deputies handcuff her and they physically touched her against her will and that’s technically a battery.”
FOX 2 News has tried to track down Sheriff Montgomery for days, both by phone and in person. Our news crew walked into both courthouses, where he works from, to ask for him. We also flagged down vehicles marked “Sheriff.”
Interestingly, Montgomery had called us on Monday, saying he wanted to respond to answer recent allegations against him. Now he appears to have changed his mind, as we’ve made two trips to his office, waiting more than 90 minutes, and he just won’t come out. Six different employees said he was in the office and knew we were outside, ready to talk with him.
Meanwhile, the FBI continues its investigation of the jail case, along with a separate incident involving a former deputy, who said the sheriff showed up at his personal security job and wrongfully demanded his gun and security license. Both cases come with similar allegations about the sheriff’s authority.
