O’FALLON, Mo. – Patrons filled the restaurant Mi Mexico Lindo Mexican Grill all day to lend a helping hand to the Calkin family, who tragically lost their daughter days ago.
The fundraising event was organized by Ryan Coffman, the GoFundMe organizer, and the restaurant owner, who felt compelled to help. The restaurant donated 15 percent of the day’s proceeds to the family.
The GoFundMe has now surpassed it’s $25,000 goal and shared the family’s initial reaction to the community’s overwhelming response.
“They were floored…speechless. I mean, they were very grateful, and coming from an entrepreneurial lifestyle myself and knowing that they are entrepreneurs also, I can only imagine how it feels to have people backing them while trying to focus on their grieving,” Coffman said.
Even the restaurant owner commented on the incredible turnout, noting that Wednesday was busier than usual. Coffman stopped by the restaurant, picked up a meal, and delivered it to the Calkins family before joining the community in honoring the young girl’s memory.
“The family has had everything turned over to them as well. They are very appreciative of all the support from the community. Everybody that has come through, pulled through on donations and their thoughts,” Coffman added.
As donations continue to pour in—with over 500 supporters contributing—Coffman will keep the GoFund Me open as the Calkin family begins the long road of healing.
“I believe that supporting this fundraiser is going to put money in this family’s pocket to ease up on the pain. I know it’s not going to bring their daughter back, but by having financial means, it’s going to help ease up any need that they may have,” customer and donor Mike Ruffino said.
Meanwhile, at the scene of the accident, a growing memorial of flowers and mementos marks the community’s shared grief.
Coffman stated the funds have been turned over to the family’s possession and the GoFundMe will remain up to continue to support the family. If you would like to donate, you can click here to donate.
