ST. LOUIS – Road crews on both sides of the river were prepared Wednesday for battling winter weather.

Drivers may have experienced difficulties navigating the heavy bands of snow in the early morning hours.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol believes slick roads were to blame for a five-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 70 and Mid Rivers Mall Drive that resulted in traffic backups and injuries. Officials warn drivers they could continue to see spotty conditions.

Over 200 snowplows were ready to be deployed, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the area. Roads were pre-treated throughout the day.

“People need to slow down, be careful, and especially if we’re out there, you see us out there, give us room to work,” MoDOT District Maintenance Engineer Bob Becker said.

He added that drivers need to watch out for roads freezing along intersections, bridges, and flyover ramps.

MSHP Sgt. Andrew Cadburry said, “The snow is, it looks like it’s clearing out, but we do have some bands coming in… just remain cautious.”
