PACIFIC, Mo. – Back again this spring is the environmental bagging system, which will once again be put to work as river levels climb.

Flooding is expected to reach the moderate category in Pacific and the community will begin filling sandbags Saturday morning.

Residents in the area are no stranger to the challenges that the Meramec River can bring.

Mayor Heather Filley says they anticipate the river to crest at a level comparable to last November’s high waters.

While they are not planning any mandatory evacuations at the moment, all hands will be on deck to help their residents.

“We wanted to make sure that we are prepared both with all the first responders. Emergency, fire, EMS, ambulance, police department, as well as our public works department. You know, make sure that everybody is on the same page. In addition to utilities, Ameren and Spire. We’re all here,” Filley said.

The school district is keeping a close eye on this as well and plans to make their decision about closures on Sunday but has notified staff and parents.

Filley just advises the community to stay up to date with the situation utilizing their resources.

“My message is for citizens just to keep a close eye on the water. There’s many sources to keep an eye on. Social media, web pages, we will be communicating,” Filley said. “Please follow those precautions. If there’s any indication that people are going to be cut off from their homes, remember that also is going to cut off to them the time that emergency responders.”

Sand and bags will be at the commuter lot, the same location as last year, and residents can help volunteer beginning at 8 a.m.

Filley says they need all the help they can get but individuals can also come pick some up if needed.
