BOND COUNTY, Ill. – A person was left dead overnight Monday morning after being struck by a truck while exiting an ambulance in Greenville.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the crash took place shortly before 3 a.m. on westbound Interstate 70 near Exit 45, involving a tractor-trailer.
The incident occurred after authorities responded to a crash involving a pedestrian and a commercial motor vehicle, ISP said. While receiving treatment, the pedestrian involved in the crash exited the ambulance and was struck by a tractor-trailer.
After the crash, the person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries, according to ISP. The crash closed multiple lanes on westbound I-70, but they have since reopened.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
