ST. LOUIS – Cleanup efforts continued Tuesday, following a deadly tornado that tore through St. Louis on Friday. Ameren Missouri estimates that approximately 350 power poles were broken, and restoration efforts are expected to continue into later this week.
Four days after the tornado tore through the area, power crews were still at work replacing damaged poles. As of Tuesday, Ameren Missouri estimates power has been restored to 90% of customers who lost power. Approximately 2,400 workers are part of the restoration effort.
As the cleanup efforts continue, residents have expressed heartache over the devastation.
“Unless you just have no empathy at all, you cannot drive through here and not say, ‘oh my gosh,’” Kellye Tyler, a resident of The Ville neighborhood, said.
Melissa Green, a north St. Louis resident living on Cottage Avenue, shared her emotional response to the destruction.
“I’m crying again because this is devastating. People have lost everything,” she said.
Community members came together to clean up and offer supplies after she shared concerns on social media.
“I feel like now we’re a part of the community,” Green said.
For residents like Green, the loss of power has significantly impacted their daily lives.
“It’s not like we are destitute and have nothing, but we have no lights, so we have emptied out all the refrigerators and freezers. You know we can’t eat,” she said.
The area has been without power since Friday, and there was excitement among residents as power crews approached to restore service Tuesday.
“Look, look, they’re almost ready. I think we may have light tonight,” Price said.
Ninety-two-year-old James Price has been checking on his home daily, as the lack of electricity has him staying with family.
“You can’t be in your home; your food and everything is spoiled,” said Tyler, Price’s daughter.
She’s been moved by the response of past and present community members who have pitched in to help.
“In St. Louis, The Ville is still strong, and we still take care of each other,” Tyler said. “We’re going to continue to take care of each other.”
