ST. LOUIS – Earlier this week, Stray Rescue of St. Louis responded to the Riverview neighborhood of St. Louis for a report of a dog dumped from a vehicle.

When they arrived at the park near Scranton Avenue and Riverview Drive, it took rescuers about an hour to locate a German Shepherd mix who was pregnant and stuck in some mud near the Mississippi River.

“She was very dirty but she’s in our care now and she’ll be good,” Katie Grana, Stray Rescue’s event and public relations coordinator, said.

Grana said a witness was able to take a photo of a vehicle they said the dog was dumped from. That photo has been shared with police. Grana said dog dumping occurs far too often.

“These dogs are abandoned on the streets every day,” she said.

When can St. Louis expect to see the first snow this year?

Stray Rescue is asking anyone interested in adopting or fostering to contact the animal rescue agency. The rescue group reports more dogs are being rescued than adopted. An adoption event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Grana said anyone interested in learning more about efforts to enhance penalties for dog dumping and other animal abuse crimes should contact the Missouri Alliance of Animal Legislation.

She added that if anyone ever feels overwhelmed caring for their dog, there are options other than abandoning them. Stray Rescue can help with vet care, food and additional resources.

“We would so much rather your dog stay in your home, and we assist you than find your dog on the street,” Grana said.
