ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A welcomed break from the rain did not deter the Meramec River from moving tree branches and other debris with a swift current on Sunday.

Mick Bickham, a Fenton resident who stopped to look at the rising water, said, “It’s definitely picking up speed.”

The Meramec River in Fenton is expected to crest on Tuesday at 28.5 feet.

In Eureka, floodwaters covered a section of Highway W near Twin River Road on Sunday.

“We’re still going to be in major flooding conditions, but we should not have homes that are impacted,” Chief Scott Barthelmass, Eureka Fire Protection District, said. “It will be roadways, farmland, and parkland that will be affected.”

He encourages drivers to avoid the temptation to ignore road-closed signs.

“The road’s closed for a reason,” Barthelmass said.
