ST. LOUIS – The Red Cross is now giving financial assistance to those impacted by the May 16 tornado in St. Louis.
FOX 2 had the chance to speak with one tornado survivor who is receiving help from the organization. This survivor, Yusmary Perozo, came to St. Louis a year ago for a better life with her family.
She also recently gave birth.
Her baby boy is just a few days old. Yusmay was released from the hospital on Tuesday, but she initially had no home to return to following the tornado’s devastation.
“(Yusmary) was obviously very scared and very desperate because she had never lived through something like that before,” Red Cross Executive Director Lakricia Cox explained to FOX 2.
Perozo was inside her home on May 16 when the tornado hit. When the weather took off, she hid under a few boxes.
“Suddenly, the windows started to explode and she started running down to the basement,” Cox said.
The weather’s impact began intensifying, with bricks from the home coming down.
In the aftermath of the tornado, Yusmary, her husband and their four children had no roof over their heads.
“The reason she came to this country was to provide stability for her children and from night to day they no longer have that home anymore,” Cox told FOX 2.
And even after giving birth, the hospital that cared for Yusmary did not want to release her, fearing she had no place to stay. The Red Cross, however, came to the family’s assistance.
The organization provided Yusmary and her family a hotel to reside at for now. The family will remain there until further notice.
