CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – A registered sex offender was caught working as a youth coach last week in Chesterfield, approximately one year after being busted for the same crime.

According to the Chesterfield Police Department’s probable cause statement, the most recent occurred on May 25 at the Beal Center Sports Complex.

An off-duty Chesterfield police officer was working security at a boys’ basketball tournament when he saw Richard L. Spivey of Bellefontaine Neighbors coaching one of the teams, which was composed of kids under the age of 17.

Spivey was arrested the morning of June 3, police said.

Spivey has a 2001 conviction for first-degree statutory rape in St. Louis County. He was sentenced to five years of probation, according to online court records, which he successfully completed.

However, Spivey was arrested in May 2024 in Chesterfield for coaching a youth basketball team. That case was still pending at the time of this recent arrest.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Spivey with one count of a sex offender serving as a coach/manager/trainer of a sports team with children less than 17 years of age. Spivey remains jailed on a $150,000 cash-only bond. He appeared in court Wednesday, June 4 for a scheduled pre-trial hearing.
