ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis Public Schools has reached a tentative wrongful death settlement with the mother of a student killed in the mass shooting at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School.

The shooting happened on Oct. 24, 2022, when a former CVPA shot his way into the building, taking the lives of student Alexzandria Bell, 15, and beloved teacher Jean Kuzcka, 61, and wounding seven others before he was killed by police in a shootout.

Keisha Acres, Alex’s mother, claims the district is liable for her daughter’s death.

While the SLPS disputes its responsibility on Acres’ claims, it made a pre-lawsuit offer to resolve the matter. In exchange, Acres would waive her right to a jury trial and be barred from pursuing any future case against the school district.

Court documents do not reveal the settlement amount, which now awaits a judge’s approval.
