ST. CHARLES, Mo. – St. Charles police shot and killed a man overnight following a crash at a major intersection near Interstate 70.
According to Lt. Daniel Gibbons, a St. Charles Police Department spokesman, officers attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations near South Fifth Street and First Capitol Drive shortly after 3 a.m. Officers ended their pursuit after the vehicle, a Lincoln sedan, continued north.
Just after 3:15 a.m., the Lincoln sedan was involved in a terrible crash with another vehicle at South Fifth Street and Ameristar Boulevard. The crash caused that other vehicle to overturn at the intersection.
Gibbons said the Lincoln driver, identified as a 21-year-old Fenton man, attempted to run from the crash scene.
At least four officers arrived at the crash and located the Fenton man a short distance from the site. Those officers shot and killed the Fenton man, who was armed with a handgun, Gibbons said.
It’s unclear if the armed man pointed his weapon at police. Gibbons said a handgun was recovered at the scene.
The four officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.
