ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The St. Louis County Police Department has released a video and audio of an encounter with an armed suspect that turned deadly last month.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Durell Dorn, was killed after he allegedly crashed a car, walked away from the crash, and fired shots at responding officers before being struck by a patrol car.
The incident transpired around 10 a.m. on Jan. 13 near the intersection in north St. Louis County.
Investigators say that Dorn crashed his car on the corner of West Florissant Avenue and Lucas and Hunt Road before he left behind the car and walked along West Florissant. Moments later, police were advised that Dorn was shooting at passing vehicles and into the air.
Two St. Louis County police officers tracked down Dorn and attempted to communicate with him. Bodycam footage released by police shows Dorn appearing to fire shots toward the officers and attempting to run away. Officers then returned fire and also briefly followed Dorn in a patrol car.
At some point, near the intersection of West Florissant Avenue and Ferguson Avenue, an officer’s patrol car struck Dorn, a moment captured on bodycam footage. Dorn was later pronounced dead.
The St. Louis County Police Department released the video Thursday as part of a critical incident briefing explaining the officers’ response and use of force.
Investigators have still not disclosed why Dorn may have left the scene of the car crash or opened fire, and it remains unclear whether he died from gunfire or being struck by the vehicle.
