ST. LOUIS – One man was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison Friday, four and a half years after shooting at St. Louis County Police officers during an attempted arrest.

34-year-old Dexter McKinnies was convicted in November for one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of assault on a federal officer and one count of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

On Sept. 1, 2020, police and members were attempting to arrest McKinnies for an investigation into several violent crimes. During this time, officials also discovered that his brother, now 36-year-old Lawton McKinnies, had an active warrant for three counts of first-degree assault and three counts of armed criminal action.

Law enforcement staged a meetup with the brothers by making them believe they were completing maintenance work on a property. Lawton was immediately arrested and police found a pistol on him.

Dexter then fired shots with a pistol from across the street and struck the FBI vehicle. Gunfire was exchanged and Dexter was hit.

According to officials, the brothers are both convicted felons and were prohibited to possess a firearm. Lawton was sentenced to four years in prison for one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Originally it was three years, but an additional year was added last March for violating his supervised release.
