ST. LOUIS – The passing of Pope Francis Monday morning at the age of 88.

Across the St. Louis region, churches are opening their doors and hearts to honor Pope Francis—a beloved spiritual leader known for his compassion and humility.

Hundreds gathered Monday at the Cathedral Basilica of S. Louis to honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis. His passing has left many in St. Louis reflecting on his powerful message of faith and service. The Cathedral Basilica opened its doors Monday for a special mass honoring the Pontiff’s life and legacy.

“Over these last 12 years in leading the church and proclaiming the gospel, Pope Francis has contently given the message that the poor are our brothers and sisters. We are called to reach out to all of our brothers and sisters  and help them in any need they have,” said Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski.

The “People’s Pope” touched lives far beyond the Vatican.

“The best thing you can do for someone who has passed away, especially someone who is crucial to our faith, is to pray for them so it  was really important to me and my family to come out to church today to show our support and our love for the Pope,” said Teresa Armesto, a parishioner.
