ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Police Officer Nathan Spiess, who was struck by a vehicle last Monday on Interstate 70 while attempting to arrest a suspected car thief, is expected to leave the hospital tomorrow afternoon.
Officer Spiess, 31, lost part of his leg in the incident.
In his release, Spiess’s family will join him by his side. Police plan to escort Spiess, and they will proceed west from the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and then onto South Kings Highway.
During Spiess’s escort, the St. Louis Fire Department will stage an American flag over I-64 at the Tamm Avenue overpass.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department asks for onlookers to remain out of the street during this process. Officials say that both directions on South Kings Highway will be temporarily closed, but it will reopen once officials reach westbound I-64.
After this event, Spiess and his family plan to recover at a private location, beginning the recovery process.
