ST. LOUIS – Esca is one of the three popular restaurants in the Central West End that were struck by the tornado on May 16.
Today, they were back open for business.
“(It) felt like a train coming toward you,” said Ben Poremba, chef & owner of Bengelina Hospitality Group. “When we came up, we were startled. This room we’re in was covered in debris and glass. The same for the patio. We had windows broken, and things flew right in.”
Bengelina Hospitality Group is reopening three of their restaurants Friday: Nixta, Esca and Florentin. The three sustained temporary closures due to the tornado that struck St. Louis’s Central West End on May 16.
“Only one of our properties, one that was not open to the public yet,” says Poremba describing the most damage. “One we were in the process of constructing. The Olio and O building, collapsed. So now we are removing the debris and hazardous material. And then we will reassess.”
Nixta and Esca will officially reopen for dinner service starting at 5 p.m., welcoming guests back with their signature hospitality, seasonal menus, and beloved neighborhood energy. Florentin, known for its fresh, mediterranean-inspired menu, was open for lunch Friday.
“The role we play in the community I feel like we’re an integral part of the community,” Poremba said. “I feel strongly the healing and the recovery is going to make it so much more special.”
All three restaurants have undergone careful assessments to ensure the safety and comfort of both guests and staff.
Bengelina owner Ben Poremba says he’s committed to revitalizing and uplifting the central west end as it continues to recover.
Reservations are strongly encouraged, especially for opening weekend.
