ST. LOUIS – The sound of generators humming could be heard outside the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis on Monday.

Friday’s deadly tornado left the agency without power and with extensive damage.

Even with the challenges, the agency has provided relief in several ways.

“We will work through this,” said Michael McMillan, the agency’s president and CEO.

He said the agency has been going door-to-door in storm-damaged neighborhoods and giving special attention to apartments for seniors.

McMillan said this is the worst disaster he has seen hit St. Louis, with city leaders estimating the damage at over a billion dollars.

‘Sadly, so many residents live on a fixed income and didn’t have the ability to pay for homeowner’s insurance,” he said.

McMillan said the agency will be hosting large-scale food, toiletry, and resource distributions like what the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis did in 2020 during COVID concerns.

“We want to help people with food, toiletries, rental assistance, in some cases temporary housing, trying to help them with insurance agents if they need it, trying to help navigate the city, state, county and federal government assistance and everything we can do to help,” he said.
