MANCHESTER, Mo. – A man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a goose outside a local Costco store.
A City of Manchester communications spokesperson confirmed that a suspect was booked and released pending a warrant application over the alleged attack, though additional details are limited.
Concerns over the alleged attack surfaced in a St. Louis Reddit community post.
The city spokesperson said the incident is being investigated as a violation of the city’s animal abuse ordinance.
The case has been referred to the City of Manchester Prosecuting Attorney for review. The spokesperson says it is not currently being handled by the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office because the case is classified as a violation of Manchester’s City Code over animal abuse.
According to Section 205.120 of Manchester City Code:
“A person is guilty of animal abuse when the person:
1. Intentionally or purposely kills an animal in any manner not allowed by or expressly exempted from the provisions
2. Intentionally or purposely causes injury or suffering to an animal; or
3. Having ownership or custody of an animal, knowingly fails to provide adequate care or control of the animal.”
A spokesperson from the St. Louis County Prosecuting tells FOX 2 that it has not been referred to such a case as of Wednesday afternoon.
Canadian geese, Missouri’s most common goose species, are protected under both state law and federal law. It is illegal to harm, kill, capture or posses them without a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and in Missouri, without a state permit during regulated hunting seasons.
Whether state or federal charges could be pursued over the alleged goose attack remains unclear.
Meanwhile, the City of Manchester spokesperson says that authorities have reviewed video of the alleged goose attack from Costco, but the video will not be released until the a review from the Manchester Prosecuting Attorney is complete.
The investigation into the alleged attack is ongoing, and further details could possibly be released at a later time.
