ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports an officer involved shooting early Saturday morning.

Officers say they received a license plate reader alert that had spotted a vehicle wanted in connection to a robbery in Richmond Heights.

They say they attempted to stop the vehicle which then fled. Police say they chased the car to an alley in the 5000 block of Kingshighway where it crashed.

While two female occupants stayed in the vehicle in compliance with officers, a man believed to be the driver ran.

Police say he hid in a nearby yard but was found and a officer attempted to arrest him.

According to police, the officer discharged his weapon, hitting the man in the mid-section.

They say the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical, stable condition and that a firearm was recovered from the suspect’s car.

The investigation is ongoing.
