(KTVI) – Small towns can offer a refreshing escape from the hustle of everyday life. Two small towns near St. Louis recently earned national recognition as standout destinations.

Home improvement TV network HGTV recently unveiled its list of the “50 of the most charming small towns in America,” spotlighting one quaint town from each U.S. state.

The selections were based on factors like restaurants, shopping, fascinating histories, family-friendly attractions, and natural beauty.

According to the list, HGTV named Alton, Illinois, as the most charming small town in the Land of Lincoln and Hannibal, Missouri, as the most charming small town in the Show Me State.

HGTV praised Alton for its limestone bluffs, bald eagle viewing opportunities, and ties to legendary jazz musician Miles Davis. The town’s spooky side, highlighted by the historic McPike Mansion, adds to its unique charm.

HGTV praised Hannibal for its vibrant shops, museums, and riverboat rides. As the hometown of renowned author Mark Twain, it draws visitors year-round, especially for events like Tom Sawyer Days and the Big River Steampunk Festival.

For those eager to visit, Alton is roughly 20 miles and a 35-minute drive away from St. Louis, while Hannibal is roughly 120 miles and a 2-hour drive away from St. Louis.

Dubbing these small towns as hidden gems, HGTV said, “Whether it’s the simplicity, the character, or the people, they are a quintessential part of American life.”

Other nearby small towns on the list include Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Paducah, Kentucky; and Paris, Tennessee.
