ST. CLAIR, Mo. — Two pipe bombs were found in a deceased man’s apartment on Monday after the man’s son discovered the active devices.

According to the St. Clair, Missouri Police Department, a man was cleaning out his father’s apartment in the 1600 block of Franklin Drive when he located the pipe bombs.

The man called police and said his father had recently passed before finding the devices encased in a small aluminum box.

Police said the contents of the box were two CO2 bottles with ends epoxied and fuses attached. When police sent a photo of the device to the St. Louis County bomb and arson squad, they verified the device could be explosive and were told not to move or touch it.

The St. Clair Fire District and Ambulance District were called and evacuated the two apartment complex buildings. The residents were taken to St. Clair City Hall until the scene was secured.

When the device was examined, officials said it was an active device and was secured by the bomb and arson squad, who transported and destroyed the device.

The residents of the building later returned without incident, police said. According to officials, the deceased man’s background revealed no evidence as to why he would have these devices.

“I would like to thank the St. Clair Fire District and the St. Clair Ambulance District for their quick response and their handling of the evacuations,” said Chief Michael L. Wirt of St. Clair PD on Facebook. “I would also like to thank the St. Louis County Bomb and Arson Squad for their quick response and handling of the device And the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for handling calls for service within our city limits while our officers were committed to this incident.”
