ALTON, Ill. – Two teenagers are in custody for allegedly opening fire at a student shortly after they stepped off a school bus in a targeted attack.
According to a spokesman for the Alton Police Department, the shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the 1200 block of Central Avenue.
No individuals nor the school bus were struck by gunfire. Alton police say the bus driver acted swiftly, driving to a safe location and following safety protocols to protect the remaining students on board.
On Friday, Feb. 28, police arrested Daniel G. Colan, 18, in Alton. An unnamed 16-year-old was arrested the following day in Wood River.
On Monday, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Coalan with two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of weapons. The juvenile was charged in a delinquency petition with aggravated discharge of a firearm and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of weapons.
Neither police nor prosecutors mentioned a possible motive for the shooting.
