ST. LOUIS — A 22-year-old accidentally shot and injured himself after exiting a vehicle that fled from St. Louis police near the city’s Penrose neighborhood.

According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police, officers were on patrol in the Penrose neighborhood and attempted a traffic stop of a Nissan Rogue, but the vehicle fled from officers speeding. After attempting to stop the vehicle, police disengaged due to safety concerns.

Shortly after disengaging, SLMPD responded to a call for a shooting at the 4900 block of Penrose. When officers arrived, the same Nissan Rogue involved in the police pursuit was on the scene.

A 20-year-old driver and 22-year-old passenger exited the vehicle after fleeing police when the 22-year-old accidently shot himself in the groin as he exited.

Police said the passenger was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The driver was arrested and found to be a federally convicted felon currently on parole. Police seized a firearm and the Nissan Rogue.
