BELLEVILLE, Ill. – A juvenile and two adults are in custody for killing a Belleville teenager who was shot in front of his home Monday afternoon.

According to the Belleville Police Department, the shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday on the 100 block of North 81st Street. When officers arrived, they found Dirico Washington suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Washington was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead. He was 16.

Late Tuesday evening, Belleville police confirmed the arrests.

The juvenile suspect was arrested Tuesday afternoon, while the adults were taken into custody Tuesday night in St. Louis. The adults are being held at the St. Louis City Justice Center, while the juvenile will be transferred to the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police said Washington and the suspects knew each other. Investigators believe the shooting was over a transaction involving cannabis and firearms.

The suspects have not been charged as of Tuesday evening. The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.

FOX 2 News spoke with Washington’s mother and sister off-camera. His older sister, Darianna, described him as a gentle giant who used to play football. Washington’s mother, Cherry, described him as a leader and protector and a loving son who recently became the father of two.

Neighbors were also still in shock following Monday’s tragedy. One said the teen used to play basketball in her driveway and described him as a “good kid.” Another said she couldn’t’ believe something like this happened in their usually quiet neighborhood.

Washington was a student within the East St. Louis School District 189. The school district released a statement on Tuesday regarding his death.

“Today, the East St. Louis School District community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of one of our students, Di Rico Washington,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss.”

The school district said their crisis support team has been activated to provide counseling and resources to students and staff in need of assistance.
