ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis arrested a suspect in last week’s fatal shooting of a Velda City man.

According to statements from the Major Case Squad, the shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, in the 7000 block of Lexington Avenue. Pagedale police officers arrived to find Robert L. Prince Jr. gunned down outside a home. Prince was 63.

Police activated the Major Case Squad to assist in the investigation. Witnesses reported hearing an argument between two people, followed by a gunshot.

Within hours of their activation, Major Case detectives arrested Terrell T. Mays, 31, in connection with Prince’s killing.

Police said Mays admitted being armed when he confronted and argued with Prince. Mays allegedly admitted to hiding the firearm at his father’s home after the shooting, which police later retrieved.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Mays with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution. Mays remains jailed on a $200,000 cash-only bond. He’s due in court on April 14 for a bond reduction hearing and on May 1 for a preliminary hearing.
