ST. LOUIS – Five people appeared in St. Louis Circuit Court on Wednesday to face charges for attacking a man outside the Central Library in downtown.

According to probable cause statements from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the attack happened Monday, April 28, outside the library, located in the 1300 block of Olive Street.

Police responded to a panic alarm near the library and saw a group of two men and three women walking away from the victim, who had suffered severe facial injuries.

The victim told police he was skateboarding and playing guitar outside the library when five people—later identified as Jayla White, 18, Mariah Mitchell, 18, Mia Swift, 24, Jayden Grundy, 22, and Jordan Grundy, 25—walked up and demanded his property.

Police said the group punched, kicked, and stomped the victim. They smashed his guitar and the Grundys stole the victim’s cell phone and house keys. An eyewitness provided police with a video of the attack.

Authorities caught up with the group a short time later and took them into custody. One of the individuals attempted to resist arrest by spitting on an officer.

According to court documents, the three women have St. Louis City addresses, while the Grundys have Wisconsin addresses.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged White, Mitchell, Swift, and the Grundys with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, first-degree property damage. Swift was also charged with fourth-degree assault for spitting on a police officer. All five were jailed without bond.
