ST. LOUIS – A 63-year-old man is dead after being struck by a car while crossing Chippewa Street in south St. Louis.

According to a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, the crash happened just after 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 4400 block of Chippewa, which is along the border of the Tower Grove South and Bevo neighborhoods.

Police said Floyd Lucas was walking eastbound on the northern sidewalk of Chippewa. At some point, a car traveling westbound on Chippewa struck Lucas as he attempted to cross to the southern side of the street. The driver fled.

Lucas was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

St. Louis police are handling the ongoing investigation.
