ST. LOUIS – It’s been two days since the thick of a fierce winter storm swept through the St. Louis area. Highways are still feeling the chill, making Tuesday commutes anything but smooth.
Bommarito Automotive Group SkyFOX flew over Interstates 270 and 64 across St. Louis County and City around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. Aerial footage from SkyFOX shows that drivers are still dealing with sluggish speed and non-optimal conditions.
For much of the morning, there have been significant traffic backups on I-270, particularly in the southbound lanes near and south of I-64.
While I-64 appears to be mostly clear in St. Louis City, snow still stubbornly covers its lanes and exits in parts of St. Louis County. The patchy conditions are proving challenging for many who are likely attempting their first major commutes since the snowstorm.
Traffic is moving along most highways, but most vehicles aren’t hitting typical speed limits. According to MoDOT, many of Missouri’s highways remains at least partially snow-covered.
Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, there were also a few motorists stranded off the main paths of travel for both I-270 and I-64, adding to the challenges.
While the highways are still an issue, secondary roads and parking lots across the region are still proving treacherous, which has left drivers struggling to break free from their snowy traps. St. Louis County announced on Tuesday that crews are shifting their focus to clearing secondary roads after icy temperatures hampered earlier efforts.
