MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – One of the three men charged in a high-profile murder-for-hire case in the shooting death of Portia Rowland is set to appear in court on Wednesday.

Sammy Shafer Jr. is set to appear before a judge at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Madison County State’s Attorney charged Shafer and two others with first-degree murder in what prosecutors are calling a murder-for-hire plot.

According to court documents, Shafer is accused of orchestrating the scheme, allegedly paying Gary Johnson and Marty Shaw a total of $10,000 to kill Portia Rowland. Rowland was gunned down in her driveway while warming up her car on Jan. 21. Shafer was the husband of the victim’s girlfriend.

The three suspects made their first court appearance on Jan. 28, where a judge was set to decide if they could be released before this goes to trial.

Shafer remains in custody and has hired high-profile attorney Scott Rosenblum to represent him. Rosenblum says they plan to enter a not guilty plea. Shafer’s parents were in the courtroom Jan. 28 as well—supporting their 36-year-old son.

Johnson, the alleged shooter, is being represented by a public defender and has waived his detention hearing. Shaw, the alleged getaway driver, remains in custody in St. Louis County, where he was initially arrested. Both men are due in court on Friday.
