ALTON, Ill. – The City of Alton, Illinois will receive a six-figure federal grant to improve safety for pedestrians in downtown Alton.

Illinois U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-13th District) announced on Friday that Alton will receive a $215,152 federal grant from the Department of Transportation.

Current plans call for Alton to reduce pedestrian crossing distances and explore the possibility of reduced travels lanes and safety buffers on Piasa Street.

When can St. Louis expect to see the first snow this year?

The grant is funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021. Budzinski’s office says the goal is to make downtown Alton safer and more walkable for pedestrians.

“Safer streets mean a more connected community and today, we’re helping to make that a reality for the people of Alton,” said Budzinski via a news release. “On its third anniversary, the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver for Central and Southern Illinois with more than $215,000 for Alton to make its downtown safer and more walkable. I’m excited to see this project come to fruition and to keep working to secure critical infrastructure investments for the folks I serve in Alton and across the 13th District.”
