ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A would-be armed robber got more than he bargained for after attempting to steal his intended victim’s firearm.

According to the North County Police Cooperative’s probable cause statement, the incident occurred on Jan. 25 at an unspecified gas station in the county.

Police said Anthony Johns (age not provided) approached the victim outside the gas station and asked about buying the victim’s gun.

The victim declined Johns’ offer and said his firearm was not for sale.

Johns allegedly followed the victim and demanded the gun. As the victim continuously backed away, Johns took out his own gun and shot at the victim. Police said the victim then returned fire. Johns fled in a car.

Police said much of the incident was recorded on surveillance video.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Johns with first-degree robbery, attempted first-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal action.

A county circuit court judge signed an arrest warrant for Johns on Jan. 31, complete with a $100,000 cash-only bond.
