ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A Mehlville, Missouri, man was charged Tuesday for embezzling thousands of dollars from the church where he volunteers.
According to the St. Louis County Police Department’s probable cause statement, Patrick J. Steinway embezzled the money between June 4, 2024, and Jan. 23, 2025.
Police said Steinway, 41, worked at the Bank of Hillsboro and volunteered at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church, where he was responsible for running its athletic department and collecting fees for those programs.
During Steinway’s employment at the bank, the bank performed random audits into its not-for-profit accounts, which included the church’s accounts. Bank officials contacted St. Louis County police after noticing irregularities regarding the church accounts.
Police said Steinway opened two church accounts and a personal account, and was moving money from the church accounts into his personal account.
The church provided investigators access to its financial records, which revealed church funds were missing and that church leadership had not authorized the opening of those extra accounts at the bank.
As a result, police determined Steinway stole more than $25,000 from the church.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Steinway with one count of stealing – $25,000 or more. Steinway remains jailed on a $25,000 cash-only bond.
