ST. LOUIS – As the wheel of time turns, so does the arrival of springtime and bicycle tune-ups at Big Shark Bicycle Company.
Based in Big Bend in Richmond Heights, the business says it’s handling handlebars and higher tariffs.
“All of our suppliers have to come up with replacement price lists for everything in our store,” said Mike Weiss, Big Shark Bicycle Company Owner. “That’s what we’re seeing now: each of our brands saying here is your new 2025 price list.”
New Trump administration tariffs on China mean complete bikes and components can face tariffs of 11% up to 125%.
“Four or five years ago, tariffs were put on China that were higher than other countries,” Weiss explained. “The last four or five years we’ve seen a lot of our brands shift production to other countries like Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam. It’s all international.”
With a big supply, Big Shark says prices haven’t increased drastically, but time will tell what the tariffs will do to the bicycle business.
Big Shark owner Mike Weiss says suppliers are already telling him there will be price increases.
“I don’t think anybody likes it when gas is expensive and groceries are expensive,” Weiss said. “Those are everyday things. But we’re kind of a discretionary purchase and I think people are going to make decisions on whether they’re going to buy a bike this year or not.”
