ST. LOUIS – Another wave of vehicle break-ins in the Central West End has BJC Hospital workers on edge.

Over the weekend, more than a dozen cars were broken into in the parking garage located at the Laclede Garage.

After their 12-hour shifts, employees walked into a mess of shattered glass, broken windows, and stolen belongings this past weekend. Some were stuck waiting for help instead of going home to rest.

Employees have been left feeling unsafe, saying these kinds of break-ins have been occurring for years.

Workers say security did not catch the crime in progress, adding that security only responded after a nurse received an alert on her phone and called for help.

BJC Hospital sent an email to remind employees to park in well-lit areas and avoid leaving valuables inside their cars, but workers say that’s not enough.

They are calling for real change, including security guards stationed inside garages.

FOX 2 sat down and spoke with a BJC employee who wanted to remain anonymous.

“I think I’m probably speaking for hundreds of employees at BJC and Children’s Hospital—we want security to be present in the parking garages. We believe there should be security at the entrance of all of the garages. Someone should be monitoring who’s going in to help keep their employees safe and their visitors,” the employee said.

FOX 2 has reached out to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and are waiting for a response as of Monday evening.
