ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man appeared in court earlier this week and was ordered to remain jailed until trial for a fatal downtown shooting in June.

According to a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, the shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. on June 23, at 10th and Market streets along the edge of the Citygarden sculpture park.

Police said District 4 officers were already on a call downtown when they heard gunfire and responded. When police arrived, they found several people who had been shot. Other shooting victims then began arriving at the hospital.

One victim, a man in his 20s, died of his wounds. Five other victims survived.

At the time, homicide detectives believed a fight broke out among a group of girls, which escalated when others got involved, resulting in gunfire.

Police said t victim who suffered gunshot wounds to their hand and shoulder helped investigators identify a suspect.

Police questioned Jheritt Stansberry, 23, and said Stansberry admitted being present at the time of the shooting. Stansberry’s own Instagram feed has a video showing him at the scene around the time.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Stansberry with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Stansberry is due in court on August 5 for a detention hearing.

Stansberry has a prior conviction in Illinois from 2023 for possession of a weapon.
