ST. LOUIS – Dikisha Dale could not believe what she saw when walking along Park Avenue near 14th Street in south St. Louis this week.

She said a sinkhole the size of a car grew exponentially in just a couple of days.

“A whole car could fit in the hole,” Dale said.

The location is also where a section of Saturday’s Greater St. Louis Marathon was scheduled to travel.

Organizers tell FOX 2 they will be able to create a one-block detour around the sinkhole.

The area was fenced off Tuesday and crews from the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) were on site.

A similar situation unfolded near Cass Avenue and 17th Street, where a giant sinkhole recently took shape.

Bess McCoy, MSD public affairs manager, said the issue appeared to be related to an old brick section of the sewer system that was more than 100 years old.

“We know that it collapsed,” McCoy said. “We don’t know what’s under it though, and so what they’re doing is clearing out that hole, removing debris so that we can get a clear picture of what happened.”

Some area residents believe last weekend’s rain is to blame.

“It’s hard to say for sure if weather was a huge factor in this until we get that investigation done,” said McCoy.  “We’re not entirely sure what the full picture is, but we had a lot of rain recently.”

Dale hopes whatever is to blame is addressed.

She said, “I’m ready to leave and move.”
