ST. LOUIS – A Collinsville, Illinois, man has been charged with causing a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 64 earlier this year.
The crash happened on Jan. 17 around 1:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-64 near Jefferson Avenue.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, Rahni Alasri, 23, was operating a Dodge Ram with reckless abandon, driving through traffic lights and speeding before traveling eastbound on I-64 in the westbound lanes at Forest Park Avenue.
Police said Alasri’s Ram collided with a Honda Accord. The impact caused one of the vehicles to strike a Toyota Camry.
The driver of the Accord, Alexander Whalen, was killed. Whalen was 29. The driver of the Camry was unharmed. Alasri was hospitalized but later released.
Police said Alasri had a blood alcohol level of .284 shortly after the time of the crash.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Alasri with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and DWI – death of another.
