COLLINSVILLE, Ill. – The fatal shooting of a Collinsville, Illinois, woman last week was the result of a murder-for-hire plot, law enforcement announced Monday afternoon.
Three men are facing first-degree murder charges and additional charges in the death of Portia Rowland. They were arrested over the weekend. Two of the suspects were arrested in Illinois and are in custody at the Collinsville Police Department. The third suspect was arrested in Missouri and is in custody at the St. Louis County Jail. They’re awaiting extradition back to Madison County.
Rowland, 32, was fatally shot around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the 1300 block of Olive Street. Investigators said Rowland had been warming up her car in the driveway when a gunman approached and shot her. Rowland was declared dead at the scene.
Collinsville police activated the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis to take charge of the investigation. Over the next five days, 30 investigators followed over 200 leads.
Police credited their diligent work and said license plate readers helped them track the suspected shooter’s vehicle back to Missouri.
Meanwhile, visitation and funeral services for Rowland are set for Monday afternoon and evening at the Irwin Funeral Home in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
