ST. LOUIS – The possibility of heavier snow falling in communities south of St. Louis led to a rush of shoppers buying winter supplies at the Phillips Express Mart in Festus on Monday.

“The temps are supposed to get way, way, down,” said Zach Wilde, the owner of Wilde Lawn Service.

He spent Monday spreading ice-melting chemicals on clients’ sidewalks, parking lots and driveways.

Wilde said the extreme cold is already causing problems.

“We’ve already been noticing some refreezing on some of the spots from that snow a couple of days ago,” Wilde said. “It’s definitely going to happen.”

Chief John Barton of High Ridge Fire Protection District hopes drivers will stock up on the essential  items they may need before snow starts falling.

“If you’re going to travel at all during this weather, we always encourage people to have a kit in their car,” Barton said.

Barton suggested for individuals to have extra clothing, blankets, food, water, a fully charged cell phone and a way to signal for help if  in distress.

“It’s going to be bitterly cold, so it’s not going to be weather that’s conducive to getting outside of your vehicle and standing outside,” Barton said.
