ST. LOUIS – A courtroom outburst during the trial of Daniel Riley resulted in a conviction for Erick Buntyn today, who pleaded guilty to threatening jurors and the judge.
Buntyn, a 35-year-old supporter of Riley, made the threats moments before Riley was convicted of driving into high school volleyball player Janae Edmondson.
Janae was in town with her parents on Feb. 18, 2023, to compete in a volleyball tournament. They were walking in downtown St. Louis when Riley’s SUV struck Janae and pinned her against a parked car. The incident caused her to lose both legs.
The judge, whom Buntyn threatened, spoke as a victim and expressed a desire to keep the felony conviction on Buntyn’s record.
Buntyn accused both the judge and jury of being racist during the trial.
While Riley received a sentence of more than 18 years in prison for his actions, Buntyn was sentenced to two years of probation for his threats.
The judge who was threatened testified as a victim, saying he wanted to keep the felony conviction on Buntyn’s record.
