ST. LOUIS – Walgreens is closing its doors again in north St. Louis, leaving residents scrambling for options.
For many, Walgreens is more than just a drugstore–it’s their only access to medication, essentials and even basic groceries. Now, with more locations shutting down, the community is left asking: What’s next?
Customers at the Kingshighway Boulevard and Natural Bridge Road location say they were notified through text Monday about the closings.
Some did not know about the upcoming closure and were left frustrated as their community is becoming a pharmacy desert as another location on Grand Boulevard closed last April.
“It’s a lot of people that rely on this Walgreens that’s in the area. They probably can’t make it to another Walgreens that’s further out,” customer Kiara Nash said.
Roschell Stockard added, “I’m upset because this is the second one and it looks like they are closing them down in our neighborhoods.”
With more pharmacy closures, local pharmacies are filling the gap.
Greater Health Pharmacy & Wellness, the only pharmacy in the state that delivers both medicine and food, has taken in hundreds of transfers from Walgreens patients. They offer free delivery across the St. Louis area.
“People have been calling, we have been transferring. We have the capacity to support those patients. We are prioritizing people who have Medicaid coverage,” Founder & CEO of Greater Health Pharmacy & Wellness Dr. Marcus Howard said.
Medicaid patients often lack transportation and access to essential resources, according to Howard.
“We have hundreds of deliveries going out a day,” he added. “Everybody who’s a Greater Health customer gets free home delivery and fruits and vegetables, so we don’t discriminate on our customer base.”
Walgreens and its closest competitor, CVS, have announced plans to close about 1,000 locations each, leaving many to wonder where they will go for medications.
FOX 2 reached out to Walgreens for comment, and we are still awaiting a response.
The Kingshighway and Natural Bridge location is set to close on March 27.
