ST. LOUIS — Soon after Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the new pope and took on his new name, Pope Leo XIV, the pontiff reportedly had some unexpected connections to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Affiliate station WGN in Chicago spoke with the new pope’s brother, John Prevost, to discuss the issue of what baseball team the family supported.

Prevost told WGN that the household was split as their mom was a Chicago Cubs fan and their father was a St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Prevost explained to WGN that despite growing up in the split household, Pope Leo XIV was always a fan of the Chicago White Sox, while some still allege he belonged to the Cubs.

“He was never, ever a Cubs fan. So I don’t know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan,” John Prevost told WGN.
