ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – A dog seen wandering an island along the Mississippi River a week ago has finally been rescued.
The dog was trapped on Dardenne Island, located north of Kampville in St. Charles County. Rescuers were on the scene on Feb. 24 but struggled to get to the dog due to lingering ice in the Mississippi River.
At the time, the dog fell through the ice more than once and ran from anyone approaching. Rescuers had deployed various equipment in their rescue attempts, including a duck boat and a drone with thermal imaging.
After a week without success, a trap cage was set up Monday morning and the dog was caught.
Rescuers don’t know how the dog got on the island but suspect she may have been abandoned.
In the meantime, the dog is in the custody of St. Charles County Animal Control. She’s being examined at its adoption center on Mid Rivers Mall Drive. Once she receives a clean bill of health, she’ll be up for adoption.
