EUREKA, Mo. – A Eureka family watched as their home went up in flames in a matter of minutes Thursday night.

The fire broke out in the 600 block of Grandview Ct. just before midnight.

The family says they lost everything in the fire. However, their dogs are the main reason they were able to escape.

“Our dog was making these weird noises—kind of growling he’s never done before—and 15 seconds later, my wife said, ‘Do you smell that?’…It didn’t smell like a fire. I got out of bed, and when I went into the living room, it was already coming in with smoke,” homeowner Geoff Biderman said.

Although the family lost everything, they say they are counting their blessings.

“Family is safe—that’s the most important part,” Biderman said. “This stuff is replaceable. It’s just tough. I ran out in my boxers; that’s literally all I own right now.”

When crews had arrived at the scene, the home was already engulfed in flames.

“It’s a challenge for our crews… when we respond, we respond to a call; but usually that’s someone’s worst day,” Fire Assistant Chief Scot Barthelmass said.

No one in the family was injured in the fire. One of their cats perished, but the other pets survived.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
