ST. LOUIS – A man was shot and killed at an apartment building near the Saint Louis University campus Tuesday night.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of Lindell Blvd. outside of The Coronado apartment complex.

Upon officers’ arrival, they found a 21-year-old man shot in the chest inside one of the units. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police believe the incident was drug-related, as there were drugs found at the scene. They say no students from SLU were involved.

“I understand that the apartment building—the Coronado—is essentially across the street from the campus, however, investigators don’t believe that this had anything to do with the university nor were any students necessarily in harm’s way,” Sgt. Charles Wall from the St. Louis Police Department said. “It does appear to be some type of drug-related incident. Whether it was a drug transaction gone bad or some type of dispute.”

Although the apartment complex is not directly connected to SLU, students who do live in the building heard the gunfire.

“I actually live the floor above where it happened. In my head, I was like, ‘I knew it,’ I knew something happened. I just didn’t expect it to be in the building,” Sara Mha, student, said.

Police have not released any further details on victim identification or potential suspects. SLU sent out alerts to students and a letter to the community Wednesday.

Part of the letter read, “While we are thankful this incident did not directly involve any members of the SLU community, we understand that such incidents can be concerning. Please know that DPS has an excellent relationship with SLMPD, and your safety and well-being remain our top priority.”

The Coronado told FOX 2 they did not have a comment at this time.
