ST. LOUIS – A man charged with abducting and murdering a Clayton mother now faces a federal grand jury indictment.
Anjuan Mosby is accused of kidnapping and killing Michelle Hampton on Nov. 20. Due to his federal custody, he missed his scheduled appearance at the Carnahan Courthouse for a detention hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said Mosby abducted Hampton from her home on Whitburn Drive last month and forced her to drive to several banks across the city to withdraw cash. Mosby allegedly shot Hampton multiple times, leaving her body in an alley on Greer Avenue in north St. Louis, eight miles from her home.
Investigators believe Hampton was targeted over a $40,000 settlement she was holding for her brother. Federal court documents reveal the suspect was dating Hampton’s sister, Samantha, who had told him about the settlement.
On Nov. 20, Samantha spotted a terrified Hampton in her SUV, with a masked man in the passenger seat. A yellow truck, which also allegedly had masked men inside, blocked Hampton’s vehicle.
Samantha called 911 and attempted to follow her sister but Samantha lost track of the vehicles after Mosby allegedly fired shots, shattering her sister’s car window, which held two kids inside.
Police recovered her Hampton’s car and a “vehicle of interest.”
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Mosby with 20 counts, including first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. A second suspect, Emmanuel Suarez, is facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and robbery in city court.
The federal grand jury indictment charges Mosby and Suarez with kidnapping resulting in murder and both men with being felons in possession of a firearm.
