ST. LOUIS — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul warns that flood-damaged vehicles from recent hurricanes Helene and Milton may soon appear on the used car market, taking advantage of the nationwide vehicle shortage.
Thousands of vehicles were flooded across southeastern states, and some sellers may try to hide this damage through extensive cleaning and “title washing” – moving vehicles through multiple states to conceal their history.
Signs of flood damage include musty odors, hidden rust, water lines under the hood, and non-functioning electrical systems. Buyers should have cars inspected by a trusted mechanic, avoid sight-unseen purchases, and check vehicle history reports before buying.
