DEFIANCE, Mo. – Frisella Landscape Group’s snowplows have been busy the last few weeks in Defiance clearing residential and commercial walkways and parking lots.
“The easiest way to do this is to use calcium chloride or calcium magnesium,” Frisella Landscape Group Production Manager Brandon Kuhlmann said. “You’re not going to get it with just mother nature. You’re going to have to throw some of that down and it’s pet friendly and come back to it in a few days.”
They are now sharing one of their secrets on the best way to combat dangerous ice.
Their pet and concrete-friendly mixture are being used to try and get sidewalks and driveways cleared.
“You want to let that sit and when it’s a little warmer, you’re going to have to get in there with a shovel,” Frisella Landscape Group Operations Manager Greg Kolkmeyer said. “Because its going to get warmer but at night below freezing so that will just keep refreezing and you’re not going to just get it with Mother Nature.”
Ultimately, the heavy lifting or chopping at this life-sized icebox outside will need to be done by someone with a shovel.
“Calcium chloride works up to negative 25 degrees,” Kuhlmann said. “Now the colder it is, the less it’s going to work. On these warmer days, that will loosen it up real nice so you can get in there with a shovel and get it out of the way.”
